Have you ever been in that awkward situation where you hear a word…and you KNOW it’s a real word…but you have NO idea what it means? Asking for a friend.
Typically these moments come at the most inopportune times, like when you’re on a date with a super cute guy, or being asked a direct question at the annual meeting…ok fine – I am that friend.
Yup, with more than 1 Million words in the english language, it’s bound to happen at one point or another. However, when it comes to talking about creating an email list…HAVE NO FEAR. You’re Perennial Wing-Woman is here!
The group of email addresses you receive from your blog/website.
The very first introduction email a subscriber receives after signing up for your email list. (We’ve got a free template for you right here!)
The name of a single email that you create and send out to all of your subscribers at one time.
When you create multiple email campaigns and schedule them to automatically send to your subscribers in a specific order. Example: Scheduling 3 emails automatically be sent over a 5 day period of time.
When an email doesn’t get delivered to a subscribers inbox, and is then returned to you, the email has bounced. A soft bounce is if the email address is valid, but the individual mailbox is full or not working. A hard bounce happens when the email address is not valid.
The percentage of subscribers who opened your email campaign. This varies for different industries, but an average open rate would be around 15-20%.
The different “buckets” that your subscribers are placed into. For example, if your subscribers are made up of photographers and brides, then you would send photography related tips to one list, and wedding related tips to the other. Segmentation is KEY, and ensures that your audience receives the kind of info from you they are looking for.
A living, breathing human being with a beautiful soul who is hoping you can help them solve a challenging problem they are facing (and we know that you can <3)
Where your subscribers enter their personal information (first name, last name) in order to gain access to your email list.
A valuable piece of content that you provide which incentivizes people to subscribe to your email list. Other similar terms you might hear are freebie and opt-in (not to be confused with opt-in form).
Focusing efforts on developing systems and strategies that will grow your email list.
The percentage of subscribers who both opened your email and then clicked a link inside of it.
Automatically program a subscriber to receive a series of emails once they sign-up for your email list. For example, after a subscriber signs up, wait one day, then send another email, wait 7-days and send another email. Then, perform an action and add this subscriber to a completely new segment.
Automation is anything system you put in place to automatically take an action on your behalf, given a set of variables. Often used inter-changably with the word for workflow (as mentioned above). A workflow is a great example of automation.
When a subscriber chooses to remove themselves from your email list. It’s important to always include a place where recipients can unsubscribe at the bottom of your email (it’s the law).
The attention grabbing text that anyone receiving your email will read when delivered to their inbox.
A short piece of text that previews what the email itself is about. This is seen right underneath the subject line in the subscribers inbox.
YOU! The individual’s/business email address who is actually sending the email.
An opt-in form that appears on your website momentarily encouraging visitors to sign-up for your email list.
A static webpage with a direct URL link that contains an opt-in form on it that encourages visitors to sign-up for your email list.
A way for visitors to your website to join your email list. The fields to sign-up are permanently embedded into your website. This way, anyone viewing your homepage (or any page) can sign-up and join your email list at any time, instead of going to a different website to sign up or waiting for a pop-up box to re-appear.
Our absolute favorite email list platform is FLODESK! You will hear us sing about FLODESK until the cows come home, because we use and believe in that platform – especially for anyone just getting into the email marketing space.
